The Jewish school in Morocco

We cannot talk about the Jewish education in Morocco, without mentioning the Hebrew Normal School of Casablanca.

The Hebrew Normal School of Casablanca or ENH, founded in 1945, is a middle-high school approved by the French Ministry of National Education [1], a partner of the Agency for French Education Abroad.

“The Jews had to be given new reasons to live and to hope. We couldn’t have opened this school elsewhere. The largest community in North Africa was in Morocco. “

Quote from Rabbi Isaac Rouche (1906-1983),

The Maguen David Normal School [2] was founded in 1946, under the leadership of Samuel D. Lévy (1874-1970), British educator and philanthropist, and Jules Braunschvig (1908-1993).

Today, the school, located in the residential area of the Oasis, still has 150 students. It welcomes students from the sixth grade to the final high school year. Each class has an average of 22 students. The middle and high school students of this school are of the Jewish faith.

A new program

Starting 2021, elementary school students will take a course on the history of the Jewish presence in Morocco in Arabic language. The introduction of new chapters in the educational curriculum will also concern high school students. This approach is part of a vast program to overhaul school textbooks launched in 2014. The aim is to “highlight the diversity of Moroccan identity”, as emphasized by Fouad Chafiqi, director of school programs at the Moroccan ministry of education.
